FR - Write Fault Reset Option
-----------------------------
The Write Fault signal is internally latched. A selectable option is
provided to clear this latch. When the drive is in normal condition
(no jumper is installed), this option resets the Write Fault latch
when the Write gate is removed. It is reasserted after the Write
Fault is cleared.

The selected option (with jumper is installed) resets the Write
Fault latch when the drive is not selected. It is reasserted after
the Write Fault is cleared.

ST - Self Test
--------------
This option is used during the manufacturing of the drive. Self-test
is not recommended for field use. This option causes the stepper
motor to actuate the heads in a butterfly seek mode and it disallows
control sent via the interface.

Installation direction
----------------------
The drive may be mounted in any attitude!

The OCTAGON KL320/330 may be mounted in any position. Twelve mount-
ing holes are provided in the drive chassis for installation. Eight
of these holes accept M4 metric screws; the remaining four holes
accept #6-32 machine screws. Up to four drives may be mounted in a
standard 3.25" x 5.75" x 8.0" space in a host system.

Power dissipation for the KL320/330 drives is 11.0 watts (typical).
Cooling, whether by air or fan, must be sufficient to keep both the
drive and the host system within the required temperature range. In
addition, 0.04-inch clearance must be provided for cooling, shock &
vibration, and easy installation and removal.

The KL 320/330 can be installed into any computer system that has a
disk controller which supports the ST412/ST412-R (KL 330) interface.
These products are ideal for ruggedized applications and specially
suited where compact size, lightweight, high storage capacity, and
reliability is required.

Electrical Interface Requirements
---------------------------------
Three types of connectors are required for the KL 320/330 electrical
interface. Kalok recommends the following types or their equivalents:

           Name Part Number
           ---------------------------------------------------
           P1 (J1): Control Interface AMP 88373-3
           P2 (J2): Data Interface AMP 88373-6
           P3 (J3): Power Supply AMP 1-480424-0 (Housing)
                                        AMP 350078-4 (Pins)

Cable Connections
-----------------
For control and data interface, Kalok recommends twisted pair or flat
ribbon cables. These cables should not be longer than 20 feet. In
addition, the power cable should have twisted pair for each line
voltage and return.

MFM Write Data
-------------
(J2 Pins 13 and 14)

The MFM Write Data lines are input lines terminated by an RS-422
differential line receiver with 100 ohms input impedance. These lines
should be driven by a standard RS-422 line driver.

MFM Read Data
-------------
(J2 Pins 17 and 18)

The MFM Read Data lines are output lines driven by an RS-422
differential line driver. It is designed to drive a 105-ohm twisted
pair or flat ribbon cable up to 20 feet long. These lines should be
terminated by the host side of the standard RS-422 line receiver with
100-ohm input impedance.

Multiple Drive Interconnect
---------------------------
When more than one drive is installed into a host system, the cabling
between the controller/data separator of the host system and the
drive should be arranged.

                                DC Voltages

Terminator
----------
For multiple drives (more than two drives), the terminator is on
the last drive in a daisy chain. All drive control input signals are
unbalanced true-when-low signals, and are high impedance state when
the drive is not selected.

Drive Selected
--------------
The Drive Selected line (on the data interface) is true whenever the
Drive Selected line (on the control interface), matching the drive
address, is true.

Address Assignments
-------------------
An individual drive may have an address of 0, 1, 2, or 3. The address
is determined by the connections of the drive select jumpers. A
jumper installed at S1, S2, S3, or S4 will select drive address 0, 1,
2, or 3, respectively.

Acoustic Levels
---------------
Overall: 40 dbA

Note: Measurements are taken in an anechoic chamber with the test
unit suspended 1.0 meter (36 inches) from the floor (measured to the
bottom of the drive with PCB facing down). To meet this specifica-
tion, a one-half inch normal incident microphone should be centrally
located one meter above the top surface of the drive and positioned
perpendicular to the surface (diaphragm of the microphone to be
parallel). Instrumentation should be capable of octave band overall
"A" weighted readings within 0.5 db and dbA.

Features

KALOK OCTAGON KL320/330 OEM MANUAL 86001-001 REV.B

General Description
-------------------
The KL320/330 use a rotary band positioner driven by a bipolar
stepper motor. This operates under the control of a microprocessor to
position the read/write heads. The head positioning mechanism is
designed in such a way that both thermal loops of the positioning
system oppose each other. This results in an extremely accurate head
positioning over the entire operating range.

A ferrofluidic seal is installed to eliminate contamination from the
motor bearings. The recirculation filter at the periphery of the
disks efficiently cleans the HDA air by trapping entrained particles.

The electronics of the KL320/330 are mounted on a single circuit
board beneath the HDA. On-board diagnostics monitor the power supply,
host controller, and drive functions. Up to four OCTAGON KL 320/330
drives can be linked to a single controller on a common power and
control bus.

Buffered mode, including head settling time.
       Timing indicates average bidirectional seeks
taken after last step pulse issued by the
controller. All timing parameters are in
       buffered step mode.

Precompensation
---------------
For the KL320, precompensation is required on every track from
cylinder 300 to 615. The optimum amount of precompensation is 12
nonoseconds for both early and late bits.

Mapped Defects
--------------
Each drive shipped from the factory will have a list of defects
attached to the HDA cover. The list will indicate the number and
location of hard errors. The defects must be excluded from any data
or format usage in order to meet specified error rates.

The maximum allowable defects are:

    a. 16 per drive
    b. 10 per disk surface

All tracks on cylinder 0 will be error free.

Note: Precompensation of write data must be used to meet the
specified error rates and cylinder 0 must be defect free. Hard errors
are defined as not recoverable within 16 retries. Soft errors are as
recoverable at least once within 16 retries. Error rates specified
are met in an unmarginalized state (open window - no strobe) and do
not include the benefits of any error correction techniques which may
be employed.

Park Zone
---------
For shipping and handling, seek to track 615. This will park the
heads in a dedicated area away from data tracks. Otherwise, loss of
data may occur.

Reliability Specifications
--------------------------
Mean time between failures (MTBF) 43,500 hours
Mean time to repair 5 minutes
Preventive maintenance required None
Service life 6 years

Drive Control and Power Interface
---------------------------------
All drive outputs are driven by the tri-state drivers. All drive
control output signals are unbalanced true when low, and are in the
high-impedance state when the drive is not selected.

Observe the following restrictions when applying power to the
OCTAGON KL 320/330:

   a. If the 5-volt power is applied first, the 12-volt power must
follow within 100 msec. Both the 5-volt and 12-volt power
supplies must be able to maintain the necessary voltage and
ripple specifications with 12-ohm resistive loads.

   b. During the first four sconds, the 12-volt supply must maintain
these specifications with a 4.8-ohm resistive load.

   c. During operation, the voltage supplied to the drive must not
      exceed the specified tolerance 5%.

Interface Signal Line Definition
--------------------------------
The KL 320/330 interface contains two types of signals:
unbalanced and differential.

All unbalanced lines are true when low. For unbalanced inputs, the
low level is 0 to 0.8 volts dc and the high level is 3.5 to 5.25
volts dc. For unbalanced output, the low level is 0.5 volts (max.)
at +32mA, and the high level is 2.4 volts (min.) at -3 mA.

The differential signals are standard EIA RS-422 signals. Termination
is accomplished via a cut away 220/330 ohm resistor pack in SIP
configuration (RN1)

Power Up Sequence
-----------------
When dc power is applied to the drive, it takes about five seconds
for the drive to come to speed. READY, SEEK COMPLETE and SELECTED
signals are typically displayed 12 seconds after power up.
